Cost of releasing sex criminal over $250,000

More than $250,000 has now been spent on the release of a sex criminal from prison.

Corrections Minister Anne Tolley is under pressure to justify the spending, in light of the economic climate and because Stewart Murray Wilson, 66, was sent back to prison after five-and-a-half months.

The bill for Wilson's release is now $269,313, following a $60,000 charge because the 2G cellphone network was considered too weak to monitor him by GPS.

Mrs Tolley is saying only that she's satisfied the department did a thorough job of ensuring public safety.

The Green Party said she should demand an audit of how public money was spent on Wilson's release.
