Two brothers have been sentenced to 100 hours community service for attacking Prime Minister John Key.

John Junior Popata and his brother Wikatana launched a surprise assault on John Key when he arrived at Te Tii Marae on Waitangi Day.

Mr Key was grabbed and pushed backwards before his Diplomatic Protection Squad and police officers moved in.

The brothers changed their plea to guilty at the Kaikohe District Court on Friday.
