Public holiday for Maori New Year proposed

10:19 pm on 23 July 2009

A member's bill proposing a new public holiday to celebrate Matariki, the Maori New Year, is to get a hearing in Parliament.

The bill, in the name of the Maori Party MP Rahui Katene, has been drawn from the ballot.

It proposes a new public holiday that would fall around the winter solstice, on a date that would vary.

Ms Katene says it is a celebration that has been growing in popularity and she would like to see a dedicated public holiday.

She says she will be lobbying other political parties for support, before the bill comes up before the House.
