Rule changes expected to speed civil dispute process

6:59 am on 12 September 2009

The Law Society says changes aimed at speeding the settlement of civil disputes should stop people intentionally trying to delay the process.

Courts Minister Georgina Te Heu Heu says changes to District Court rules will encourage parties to find an agreement before going to trial.

She says disputing parties must exchange information about the claim, identify documents and witnesses, and the remedies being sought - prior to the Court dealing with it.

The Law Society says very few civil cases go to a full trial.

Civil litigation and tribunals committee convenor Andrew Beck says the current system can make some parties try to draw the process out.

The new rules take effect on 1 November.
