The New Zealand Government is contributing an initial $NZ1 million for emergency relief work following the earthquake in Indonesia and a typhoon that struck a number of southeast Asian countries.
New Zealand will provide $NZ600,000 to assist with rescue efforts and provide emergency provisions following the earthquake in Sumatra.
And $NZ400,000 will be contributed to relief work in the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia, where there has been substantial flooding as a result of Typhoon Ketsana.
Foreign Minister Murray McCully says the contributions will be channelled through the Red Cross and other aid agencies.
He says the money will help to provide medical supplies, petrol, generators, sanitation equipment, food and shelter.
