Terms set for adventure tourism industry review

9:57 pm on 15 October 2009

The terms of reference for a review of the adventure tourism sector have been announced by Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson.

Prime Minister John Key initiated the review after he got a letter from Chris Jordan, father of English tourist Emily Jordan, who drowned last year on a riverboarding trip on the Kawarau river.

Ms Wilkinson says the review will first look at the current state of the industry and then recommend changes in a report due next March.

A project working group has been formed with advisers from the Civil Aviation Authority, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime New Zealand, the Tourism Industry Association and ACC.

Other organisations will also take part, including the Department of Conservation and the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The Tourism Industry Association has welcomed the scope of the review.

Riverboard company cleared to resume

Meanwhile, the company ordered last month to pay fines and reparation of $150,000 in relation to Ms Jordan's death has been cleared by the Maritime New Zealand inspection to return to the Kawarau River.

Maritime New Zealand says its inspection showed deficiencies with the company's Safe Operational Plan, but these have been resolved.

The authority is also requiring the company to comply with the lifejacket rating used by rafting operators.
