Rural school sport funding queried

9:54 am on 27 August 2009

Some rural principals say their schools will lose out under the Government's new KiwiSport fund.

The $20 million scheme, which will replace the current $5.3 million fund, was announced by the Government two weeks ago.

Maniototo Area School in Ranfurly, Central Otago, says it will lose almost half its direct sports funding under Kiwisport, which calculates funding on a per capita basis.

Principal Peter Heron says it appears the Government has forgotten about rural schools.

But Sports Minister Murray McCully says schools will also have access to more than $8 million through regional sports trusts.
