Pita Sharples, who on Tuesday announced that he would stand down as co-leader, said the resignation of Mr Bird is part of the efforts to rejuvenate the party.

Mr Bird was elected in 2010 when he took over from founding president Whatarangi Winiata.

Dr Sharples said on Wednesday that Mr Bird made it known a couple of months ago that he would be stepping down.

He would not speculate on who Mr Bird's replacement might be.
