About 300 party members were at the Kings and Queens Performing Arts Centre in South Dunedin on Sunday afternoon for their chance to see the leadership roadshow.

The three candidates homed in on economic development highlighting the closure of the Hillside workshops and proposed job cuts at the Invermay research centre.

David Cunliffe recounted his history as an Otago University student and promised to get the Government off the sidelines.

He said New Zealand has to invest much more in future research and development projects.

Shane Jones said John Key had used New Zealand's resources for a massive gambling exercise and he would build Dunedin into an innovation capital.

Local born Grant Robertson got the biggest reaction from the crowd with a promise that a future government he led would not abandon Dunedin again.

Dunedin was the third-to-last stop for Labour's 10 day leadership roadshow.

The last two meetings are in the party's birthplace at Blackball on the West Coast on Monday and in Christchurch on Tuesday.
