Prime Minister John Key has been lobbying furiously in New York for New Zealand to be elected to the United Nations Security Council for 2015-2016.

John Key arrived in the city on Wednesday morning NZ time and, despite an upset stomach.

had a round of meetings with leaders from Costa Rica, Colombia and Ivory Coast.

Mr Key says he got over his illness quickly and is pleased with how his early meetings went, saying he was getting good signals.

He says there's a lot of work to be done on the campaign, which New Zealand has been working on for a very long time.

Mr Key has at least another 15 face-to-face meetings with other leaders over the next three days, and will also attend a host of other UN functions, as well as speak to the General Assembly on Thursday.

New Zealand's bid has gained some support from the UN's High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Angela Kane, who says it's important small countries are represented on the council.
