High Commission to open in Barbados

7:54 am on 28 September 2013

The Prime Minister has announced New Zealand will open a new High Commission in Barbados.

John Key made the announcement as he lobbied other countries at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, including the 15 members of the Caribbean Community, to support New Zealand's bid to be on the Security Council in 2015-16.

Mr Key says like the Pacific, the Caribbean is made up of a group of small island states.

He says it is important for their voices to be heard on important global issues.

Mr Key says New Zealand understands the importance of a regional approach to the challenges small states face.

The High Commission will be in Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados.
