The Green Party is proposing to introduce mandatory measures to limit what gamblers can spend on electronic gaming machines from 2017.

Co-leader Metiria Turei says the move is in response to the SkyCity deal, part of which allows the casino operation more gaming machines in return for building an international convention centre in Auckland.

She says the pre-commitment cards are intended to stop people who have the potential to become problem gamblers, from going down that path.

"They've been found to work very effectively for that purpose in Norway.

"That is also why we have to have the post-harm measures like strengthening self exclusion, the player tracking to make sure that problem gamblers can be identified as quickly as possible."

Ms Turei was asked whether people will be able to get around the system by using aliases.

"You can't stop people who want to work around the system, but the system is designed and is effective for ordinary gamblers to stop them from developing the problem."

She says the Greens have sent the proposals to the Labour party and hopes to get its support.

The Labour Party says it hasn't looked at the proposals yet, but any vote on the changes would be a conscience vote for its MPs.
