Backbenchers to fight for electorates

9:17 am on 1 November 2013

Two National Party backbench MPs are facing challenges to their selection in their electorates for next year's general election.

Kaikoura's Colin King and Wairarapa's John Hayes are both in their third terms as MPs and say they will not go down without a fight.

Former winegrowers leader Stuart Smith, who is putting his hat in the ring for the National Party candidacy in Kaikoura, says Mr King is not serving the electorate well.

However Mr King, who won the seat at the last election with an 11,500 vote majority, says he has been doing a good job.

Former Kaikoura National Party electorate chairperson Tim Leslie says there is a mood for change within the electorate.

Former banker and winegrower Alastair Scott is challenging Mr Hayes. He says he has nothing personal against Mr Hayes, he just wants to get into Parliament.
