Asset sales no impediment to Conservative deal with National

Conservative Party leader Colin Craig says he does not think the Government's asset sales policy would necessarily be an impediment to doing a deal with National after the next election.

Prime Minister John Key has suggested the Conservative Party could be a possible support party or coalition partner after the 2014 election.

But the party is opposed to parts of the Government's asset sales programme including the possible float of Genesis Energy.

Mr Craig told The Nation programme on TV3 on Saturday that the Conservatives could support a National Government while opposing asset sales.

He said the Conservatives don't believe the Government has a mandate to sell assets like Genesis, although he was open to the idea of selling shares in Air New Zealand.

Mr Craig said the Conservatives could vote for confidence in a National Government while opposing asset sales.

He said he would like a ministerial role in the housing area if his party did form a coalition with National.

Mr Craig said his background in property management would help him work on the housing issues in Auckland and Christchurch.
