MP critical of minister's decision to reject extra compensation

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman says there is nothing in a select committee report that convinces him to pay extra compensation to two brothers seriously injured while serving in the Defence Force.

George Nepata was left a tetraplegic and his brother Damien Nepata received burns to 40% of his body in two separate incidents while serving more than two decades ago.

The Maori Affairs Select Committee unanimously recommended the brothers get compensation in addition to that provided by the Superannuation Fund and ACC.

Dr Coleman rejects that recommendation saying the Committee didn't explain the thinking or reasoning behind its decision.

He says based on its one-page report, no reasonable person would award compensation.

Independent MP Brendan Horan says it is outrageous the Government has decided not to give extra compensation.

Mr Horan, who served on the select committee, said bypassing its unanimous decision undermines the democratic process.
