Flavell signals support for National

Mr Flavell has defended the Maori Party's support arrangement with National, saying it has achieved a lot by being part of the Government.

Mr Flavell has told Radio New Zealand's Nine to Noon programme his party's members continue to support its involvement with the Government up until the 2 September election.

He says after the election the party will once again go back to members to determine which major party it should support.

But Mr Flavell has indicated the major party that wins the most votes will have the inside running.

"It would sort of stand to reason that if one party has a greater majority than the other single parties, then the sense would say that you would probably go with them but in the end we've got to balance that out with about how our supporters feel about the relationship; whether we've done enough. They'll tell us."

Mr Flavell says the Maori Party has achieved a lot in Government, including promoting a debate on constitutional change and introducing whanau ora to better provide social services to families.
