Greens seek tougher pre-pay rules

9:30 am on 15 April 2014

The Green Party is demanding the Government introduce rules for pre-paid power providers, saying customers are being disconnected because they cannot get to the outlets where they can buy credit.

The Greens want the Electricity Authority to monitor and regulate all the providers, as each region has only one provider offering pre-paid power.

Greens energy spokesperson Gareth Hughes says that lack of competition means poor service for users.

He says in the region from Waikato to Wellington, there are only 39 outlets for Genesis customers to top up at.

Mr Hughes says customers can be cut off if they run out of credit when the shops are closed.
