National holding northern region convention

8:16 am on 3 May 2014

The National Party is holding its northern region convention in Auckland this weekend.

Radio New Zealand's political editor says a hot topic of conversation is likely to be the fall of cabinet minister Maurice Williamson, who resigned after it was revealed he phoned the police about an ongoing investigation into two complaints of domestic violence.

Prime Minister John Key, who effectively forced Mr Williamson to resign, will speak to the convention on Sunday.

It is the beginning of a series of regional conventions in election year before National holds its annual convention in Wellington in late June.
