He said the speech would focus on what Labour would do to promote economic growth to create more, higher paying jobs.

He would be speaking to an audience of predominantly small business owners as he set out the broad economic direction his party would follow.

His speech would come as Labour continued to trail National in the opinion polls but Mr Little said he was not panicked by polls results.

There'll be live coverage of Andrew Little's speech here.

Key to set out housing plans

At lunchtime today Prime Minister John Key would give his state of the nation speech, also in Auckland.

Mr Key's speech would outline the next steps the Government would take in making changes to social housing.

He said he would give an indication of how many state houses the Government intended to sell over the next few years as it shifted more responsibility for social housing to community groups.

The speeches come a day after the first Cabinet meeting of 2015 and effectively mark the beginning of the political year, although Parliament does not start sitting for another two weeks.
