The Detroit-based companies, Eight Mile Style and Martin Affiliated, are suing National for its use of a song in its campaign advertising last year.

The backing track to the rowing-themed video has been compared to Eminem's award-winning song, Lose Yourself.

National has previously said it went through the proper licensing process before using the track.

The lawyers will begin their case management process at the High Court in Wellington on Friday 20 February.
