The Government is making no comment on Sri Lanka's decision to recall its ambassador to New Zealand.
Thisara Samarasinghe was based in Canberra but was accredited to this country as well.
The government in Colombo was not commenting, but media reports from Sri Lanka and Britain said he is one of 50 former army officers being recalled after receiving their diplomatic postings as a reward for military service.
The appointment of Mr Samarasinghe was criticised in the Australian parliament and media because of allegations of war crimes against him.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was purely a matter for Sri Lanka.
