Parole law amended

10:32 pm on 24 February 2015

Legislation that will reduce the number of Parole Board hearings for criminals with no realistic prospect of release from prison has been passed in Parliament.

The Parole Amendment Bill passed its third and final reading last night, and means the Parole Board will be able to increase the amount of time between hearings for those offenders.

The intent of the legislation is to reduce the number of Parole Board hearings and lessen the stress on the victims of crimes who do engage with the hearings.

The Green and Maori Parties opposed the legislation.
