Approval for hydro-electric dams to get harder

5:58 am on 14 August 2008

The Government is proposing to make it harder for hydro-electric dams to be built.

It intends to require local authorities to consider how permanent an energy project is before giving their approval.

Minister of Energy David Parker says the concept of "reversibility" will have to be considered before a development can be approved.

That way, he says, a scheme can be dismantled later if it does not work out.
