Animal testing ban passes final reading

Legislation that will ban animal testing in New Zealand for finished cosmetic products and their ingredients has passed its third and final reading in Parliament.

The Animal Welfare Amendment Bill will also provide animal welfare inspectors with wider powers to deal with people who breach the welfare laws.

It will also make animal welfare codes enforceable.

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said New Zealanders cared deeply about how animals were treated.
