Parliament has paid tribute to the retiring Clerk of the House, Mary Harris.

Prime Minister John Key asked the House to recognise Ms Harris' retirement and her years of service to Parliament.

She began her career in Parliament in 1987 and has spent the past seven years as the Clerk of the House.

Labour's Annette King also thanked Ms Harris for her 28 years of service to Parliament.

Ms Harris was the first woman to be Clerk of the House, she said.
