Contractors' bill passes first reading

A member's bill extending the minimum wage rate to contractors has narrowly passed its first reading in Parliament.

The bill, in the name of Labour MP David Parker, will extend the provisions of the Minimum Wage Act to apply to payments made under contract such as for pamphlet deliveries.

It passed its first reading 61 votes to 60 with the support of Labour, the Green Party, New Zealand First, the Maori Party and United Future.
