Campaign launched against Douglas student bill

6:16 pm on 4 March 2010

A campaign to stop a members' bill seeking to introduce voluntary student membership has been launched.

Save Our Services is a broad coalition of community, student and union groups opposed to the bill in the name of ACT MP Sir Roger Douglas.

At present, most tertiary students pay an annual levy to their student assocations, but the bill would make student membership voluntary.

The group says if the bill becomes law, it will threaten the quality and quantity of services provided by student associations including advocacy, welfare and representation.

But Sir Roger says it is a question of personal choice and there are no other areas in New Zealand where people are compelled to join a union.

The public have until the end of March to make submissions on the bill.
