Poll puts National far ahead of Labour

The first major poll since November's election shows 60% support for National, with Labour on barely half that at 27%.

At the election, National won nearly 44.93% of the party vote, and Labour 33.99%.

The 3 News poll showed support for the Greens at 7% and for the Maori Party at 2.1%. No other party registered above 2%.

National leader John Key secured 52.1% support as preferred prime minister, followed by former prime minister Helen Clark on 13.8% and current Labour leader Phil Goff on 3.7%.

Of those polled, 79% believe Mr Key is performing well, while 6% say he is performing poorly.

Mr Goff's performance as Leader of the Opposition was rated as good by 43%, and as poor by 27%.

The poll surveyed 1,000 eligible voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%.
