The government would contribute $12 million over four years to the fund.

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Maggie Barry said the cost of strengthening heritage buildings could be prohibitive for their owners and the fund would provide financial support.

The fund would be available to all privately-owned category one listed heritage buildings, and category two buildings in areas of medium to high seismic risk, Mrs Barry said.
