Remuneration Authority chair David Oughton has resigned.
Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson says Mr Oughton does not want to be considered for reappointment when his term expires in July.
The authority determines salaries and allowances for Members of Parliament, judges, mayors and local body representatives.
Mr Oughton has been with the authority for six years, four as its chair.
