Private management of Defence bases part of review

9:27 am on 22 April 2009

Private management of Defence bases will be considered as part of a Government review of Defence.

A White Paper will be produced on the direction the Government wants to take with Defence, particularly over the next decade when decisions have to be made about replacing ageing equipment.

Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says there is a need to manage bases and camps better, with many parts of them substantially run down.

Associate Defence Minister Heather Roy says there may be ways to work with the private sector, including leasing land or buildings.

She says the Defence does not necessarily need to own everything. Military facilities could be privately owned and leased back to the Crown.

Howeveer, Labour leader Phil Goff says this would do nothing to strengthen the Defence Force.

Land owned by Defence is valued at $579 million.
