Local projects protection 'necessary' under super-city plan

6:23 pm on 28 April 2009

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says grassroot community projects need to be protected under Auckland's super-city plan.

The Government made widespread changes to a proposal from a royal commission, including replacing six sub-councils with up to 30 community boards.

Ms Bennett, who is also MP for Waitakere, says her constituents have raised concerns about funding for community projects.

She says communities want to ensure they have a voice within the super-city.

Prime Minister John Key says the scope of community boards is yet to be determined but they are likely to make funding decisions on local projects.
