Common sense has prevailed in the screening of parent helpers, say school trustees.
The Government's Education Amendment Bill, which passed its first reading in Parliament on Tuesday, does not require the vetting of parents and volunteers who have unsupervised access to children.
School Trustees Association president Lorraine Kerr says parent helpers are a valuable resource and schools depend on their goodwill to support teachers in classroom programmes.
Ms Kerr says every school is aware of keeping children safe, and boards already have strict guidelines to follow regarding child safety.
