Mr Turnbull and other senior members of his cabinet will meet their New Zealand counterparts in Queenstown on Friday for the annual Australia-New Zealand Leaders' meeting.

Prime Minister Bill English said the visit would be an opportunity to discuss global economic trends. The two countries shared interest in advancing the trade agenda in the Asia-Pacific, he said.

They would continue discussions on the situation of New Zealanders in Australia, particularly after Mr Turnbull's announcement last year of a pathway to citizenship, Mr English said.
