Govt makes move to fix child sex offender register

4:02 pm on 7 March 2017

Parliament has gone into urgency to fix a legal loophole allowing more than 100 child sex offenders to go unregistered.

The law introducing a national register came into effect last October, but convicted offenders who were on release conditions or had not yet been sentenced were taken off the list.

Police Minister Paula Bennett said those offenders were meant to be captured by the law and the changes being introduced today would make that clear.

She said the 107 offenders affected have continued to be monitored by police and Corrections.

The register requires people convicted of a child sex offence to tell police where they are staying, who with and their contact details.
