Call for prisons to remain under state control

The Human Rights Commission says the management of prisons should remain with the state.

Parliament's Law and Order Select Committee is considering a bill which would allow prisons to be managed privately.

The Government has already signalled the next prison built in New Zealand may be privately run.

Human Rights Commissioner Rosslyn Noonan told MPs that the lines of accountability are very clear with with state-run prisons.
