RNZ News understands he has won the backing of the party's local electorate, but there is still a process to go through before he is formally confirmed.

At the last election, Mr Taurima was in the running for the Labour candidacy for Tāmaki Makaurau.

The Labour Party Council decided not to allow his nomination to proceed, after he was found to have used TVNZ resources in his political work.

He also unsuccessfully sought the Labour Party candidacy for the Ikaroa-Rawhiti by-election in 2013, following the death of Parekura Horomia.

If confirmed as the Māori Party candidate, Mr Taurima would go up against Labour's Peeni Henare.

Mr Henare currently holds the seat and will stand again in the September election.
