Key directorships for the Auckland super-city transport and water agencies will still be made by the Government, despite that right being passed to the incoming council in November.
Local Government Minister Rodney Hide has clarified how the initial appointments will be made after a select committee report said the new Auckland Council would gain a bigger role.
A key part of changes announced to the Auckland reforms is greater political control over council-controlled agencies running operations such as water and transport.
The Auckland Council gains the right to appoint the chair and deputies.
But Mr Hide told Nine to Noon that the cabinet will decide the initial appointments, before the new council takes office on 1 November.
Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey says his main concern now is that the mayors find the right people for those roles.
The Government says the final piece of supercity legislation should be passed within weeks with a few technical changes still to be made.
