The Government is looking to streamline the running of polytechnics and it appears the size of governing councils could be reduced.
Education Minister Anne Tolley won't comment, as her office says the matter is under active consideration.
But it's understood she wants to reduce councils from their current maximum of 20 councillors to eight - half of whom would be appointed by the Government.
Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology chair Hector Matthews, says many people would see eight as a reasonable size.
But he says councils will still need a cross-section of community represention.
