PM supports National Party president

4:01 pm on 25 August 2009

Prime Minister John Key says he has heard nothing about the new National Party president that would preclude him from holding that position.

Peter Goodfellow has fronted up to the MPs' weekly caucus meeting at Parliament, saying he has solid support to stay on in the position.

Mr Goodfellow's appearance on Tuesday follows questions about his suitability as president by some members of the party's governing board just weeks after he was elected.

Mr Goodfellow told reporters he has the confidence of the board and is looking forward to preparing for the 2011 general election.

On his way into the caucus meeting, Mr Goodfellow was questioned by reporters. He said he made a disclosure to Mr Key about the facts after he was elected.

The Prime Minister is continuing to voice his support for Mr Goodfellow.

Mr Key says there is nothing that he has ever seen or become aware of that would preclude Mr Goodfellow from being president or an office holder of the National Party.
