The Government has confirmed plans for a new transport agency for Auckland that will focus on delivering transport projects and services across the city.
The Auckland Transport Agency will replace nine separate transport entities in the region. Its responsibilities will include roads and public transport.
Transport minister Steven Joyce says having a single transport agency will provide the focus and continuity in decision-making needed to deliver a transport network that supports the city's growth and economic success.
The new agency will work closely with and be partly modelled on the New Zealand Transport Agency, which operates at a national level.
Auckland Regional Council chair Mike Lee says the Government should provide money for electrification and electric trains, if it is serious about improving public transport.
He says an Auckland Transport Agency is nothing more than another bureaucracy with a fancy name.
