Side deals being done over emissions scheme - Labour

10:29 pm on 27 August 2009

The Labour Party believes there are smelly political deals going on behind closed doors over support for the Emissions Trading Scheme.

A select committee reviewing the scheme was due to report back to Parliament on Thursday but has been delayed after the Maori Party pulled its minority report.

The Maori Party will not comment directly on why it decided on Thursday morning to pull its report.

The Greens say it is clear the Government is pressuring the Maori Party.

Labour says there are clearly side deals going on and is questioning what the payoff will be for the Maori Party.

But Climate Change Minister Nick Smith says the Maori Party is big enough to make decisions itself.

While the committee's report is not part of any legislative process, the way party lines fall in its report back are likely to be indicative of how Emissions Trading Scheme talks are going.
