Greater integration of Maori health sector wanted

3:36 pm on 18 September 2009

Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia says she wants to see more integration of the Maori health sector.

Mrs Turia attended a hui on Thursday in Auckland, where organisations serving more than half the Maori population gathered to hear how they could be affected by government changes to primary healthcare.

While many providers are concerned about their existing contracts, Mrs Turia says she wants to see a shift to a whanau ora model, where the health of the whole family is central.

She told Waatea News her own experience running a Maori health organisation taught her the way government funding agencies measure outcomes has little to do with the health of those treated.
