PM again defends English over allowance

8:07 pm on 21 September 2009

Prime Minister John Key is again defending his deputy, Bill English, over his housing claims.

The Finance Minister receives an out-of-town allowance for his home in Wellington because he maintains a house in his Clutha-Southland electorate.

Following public criticism, he has paid back $14,000 of the ministerial allowance he claimed.

Mr Key says Bill English has been fully compliant with the rules.

He says he accepts that to some people, it will look like the MP is more Wellington-based, but that's because Mr English has been an MP for a long time.

Mr Key doesn't believe criticism over the allowances has harmed Mr English's credibility as Minister of Finance.
