The Government has announced a review of food safety and says a new law will be in place either late next year or by early 2011.
Under the proposed changes, Food Safety Minister Kate Wilkinson says, there will be more focus on firms taking responsibility for food safety than on inspectors finding problems.
Ms Wilkinson says the present Food Act is outdated. She says it imposes unnecessary costs on businesses while not doing enough to protect consumers and reduce food-borne illnesses.
