Govt has numbers to pass car crushing legislation

7:52 pm on 22 September 2009

The National Government has the numbers it needs to pass legislation allowing the confiscation and crushing of cars.

The Vehicle Confiscation and Seizure Bill is one of two bills currently before Parliament that strengthen the powers of police and courts to deal with illegal street racing.

The Labour Party supported the bill going to a select committee but has reserved its position on future votes, saying the bill needs to be tougher.

ACT and the Maori Party have decided to support the bill as it stands, meaning the Government easily has the numbers to pass the legislation.
