Hunters to have input under proposed new agency

Deer and pig hunters are likely to get more input into the management of recreational hunting areas with the planned establishment of a new agency.

A Government discussion paper is recommending a Big Game Hunting Council be established.

Under the plan the Council would have input on the environmental impact of game animals such as deer and wild pigs.

United Future Party leader Peter Dunne says it will be the first time the hunters will have had their interests formally recognised.

He says there has been unnecessary conflict in the past between environmentalists and hunters and establishing a council should improve that relationship.
