Night classes petition presented at Parliament

A petition of more than 53,000 signatures calling for the reinstatement of funding for night classes has been presented at Parliament.

The Government axed 80% of funding for Adult Community Education classes in the Budget earlier this year. Night classes are to be funded in only 50 schools.

Signatures were collected by the Community Learning Association Through Schools.

Association president Maryke Fordyce says if the cuts are not reversed, many parts of New Zealand will lose access to night classes.

Labour Party education spokesperson Maryan Street presented the petition to MPs on Tuesday.
