Defence Force housing allowances to be repaid to UN

2:01 pm on 27 August 2008

The Ministry of Defence says up to $US90,000 in extra housing allowance money claimed by some officers is being repaid to the United Nations.

A Court of Inquiry has cleared four officers of double-dipping on housing allowances while stationed at the UN in New York.

The inquiry found officers were given both Defence Force and United Nations allowances.

All the money was legitimate, but the officers were told not to disclose the Defence Force funds when filling in UN forms. All four have been censured.

The National Party has labelled the inquiry a 'whitewash'.

Commander Shaun Fogarty says the full amount will be repaid. He says a little over $US10,000 was claimed annually over eight years and some has already been returned.

Defence Minister Phil Goff has referred the issue to the Auditor General and the State Services Commissioner for an independent review.

Mr Goff told Morning Report a review will also have to be held by the United Nations.
