Succession plan devised for Maori Party presidency

The Maori Party is putting a succession plan in place to find a replacement for the party's founding president.

Professor Whatarangi Winiata indicated before last weekend's annual conference he wanted to retire, but delegates could not reach agreement on the three people who put their names forward to succeed him.

Party co-leader Tariana Turia says delegates were aware Professor Winiata's term does not actually expire until next year.

She told Waatea News they asked him whether he would see his term through and look at developing these people in the meantime.
